Sick leave
If you’re off work due to sickness or injury, your pay might go down or you may get no pay. If this happens, we use your assumed pensionable pay (APP) to work out your pension to make sure you don’t lose out.
You’ll continue to pay your basic LGPS contributions on any pay that you get while you’re off sick. If you’re on unpaid sick leave, you won’t pay any contributions.
If you’re:
- in the 50/50 section of the LGPS and
- your pay reduces to zero while you’re on sick leave
you’ll automatically move into the main section of the scheme from the beginning of the next pay period. You’d start to build up full pension benefits in the LGPS even though you’re not paying any pension contributions. This may not apply if you’re on leave for a short period. If your pay re-starts before the next pay period begins, you would remain in the 50/50 section.
