I want to move an old pension across

Who can transfer in a pension?

You’ve up to 12 months after joining the LGPS to move another pension into your LGPS pension. After 12 months you’d need both us and your employer to agree if your old pension was outside of the LGPS. You need to be under 75 and currently paying into the LGPS. You can’t transfer a pension into your account if you’re being paid your pension.

What types of pensions can I transfer?

The types of pensions you can transfer in include:

  • previous LGPS pensions
  • other occupational pensions
  • self-employed pensions
  • personal pensions
  • stakeholder pensions
  • additional voluntary contribution (AVC) plans.

Check with your previous pension provider first that the pension can be transferred.

Sometimes we won’t be able to accept the transfer. We’ll let you know if this applies to you after we’ve had the information about your previous pension.

It’s free to transfer into the LGPS. However, other pension providers may charge fees. Ask your previous provider if this would apply in your case.

How do I transfer another pension into my LGPS pension?

Transfers from another LGPS Fund in England and Wales

If you’ve a previous pension in the LGPS (England and Wales), please let us know on our membership form. If your old pension was built up after 31 March 2014, it will automatically transfer, unless you tell us not to. If your old pension was built up before 1 April 2014, it will be kept separate unless you ask us to transfer it.

Other pension benefits

If you’d like to transfer a pension from:

  • an LGPS Fund outside of England and Wales or
  • another pension scheme

please fill in the Transfer in pack (non-England and Wales LGPS). Once we have your form, we’ll ask your previous provider for the cash equivalent transfer value (CETV). We’ll then work out your benefits and give you this in writing. You can use this information to make an informed decision about whether to transfer or not.
