Why should I nominate?
As a member of the LGPS, you’re covered by a package of benefits. This includes a tax -free lump sum called a ‘death grant’ if you die before 75. You can’t leave your pension savings in your Will. We need to decide what to do with the lump sum. By telling us who you’d like the lump sum to go to, it means we can take your wishes into account. It will also:
- mean the lump sum will be paid quicker instead of waiting several months for your estate to be settled
- give you peace of mind that your lump sum goes to the right people
- help make sorting out your finances less stressful for family and friends.
A death grant doesn’t form part of your estate. If you’re applying for probate, it’s not subject to any court fees or inheritance tax. As the death grant isn’t part of your estate, we make the final decision on who gets your death grant. We will of course take your nominations into account, but we may choose to pay it to someone else. For example, if you’ve remarried and not updated your nominations since you remarried.
