How much is the lump sum death grant?
Contributing members
If you’re paying into your LGPS pension when you die, the amount of death grant will be three times your assumed pensionable pay. You can find out how much your death grant might be by logging into your online pension account. You can use the benefit protector or look at your most recent statement.
Deferred members
If you’ve a deferred pension and left:
- before 1 April 2008: your lump sum will usually be three times your annual deferred pension.
- on or after 1 April 2008: your lump sum will be five times your annual deferred pension.
You can find out how much your death grant might be by logging into your online pension account. You can use the benefit protector or look at your most recent statement.
Receiving your pension
If we’re already paying you your pension, we’ll usually pay a death grant if one of the following applies:
- You left before 1 April 2008 and you’ve had your pension for less than five years, the death grant will be equal to five times your annual pension less the pension we’ve already paid you.
- You left after 31 March 2008 and you die within 10 years of receiving your pension, provided you’re under age 75, the death grant will be 10 times the amount of your pension before you gave up any pension for lump sum (if applicable), less the pension and lump sum that has been paid to you. There is a slight difference to the calculation for any part of your pension that relates to membership before 1 April 2014.
If you left the LGPS before 1 April 1998, then extra factors need to be considered to decide whether a lump sum death grant should be paid.
Once you’ve reached age 75, there’s no death grant.
If you’re still paying into your pension when you die and also have a deferred pension or receiving a LGPS pension from us or another LGPS fund, then the death grant will be the greater of:
- The total of any death grants payable from the deferred pension and / or pensions being paid, or
- Three times your assumed pensionable pay at your date of death.
