Scheduled bodies
Overview
A scheduled body is a local government employer like:
- local authorities (county councils, district/borough councils, unitary authorities, metropolitan districts, London boroughs)
- police and fire authorities (civilian staff only)
- coroners
- academy trusts (non-teaching staff only)
- sixth form colleges
- higher education corporations
- other bodies listed in part 1 of schedule 2 of the LGPS regulations
Scheduled bodies must enrol eligible employees into the LGPS. This usually means any employee not eligible for another public sector pension scheme in that employment. They will also need to meet the general eligibility criteria.
How to join
There’s no formal joining process for scheduled bodies. Most scheduled bodies already exist but there are some circumstances where a new scheduled body may be created. For example, when an LEA school converts to an academy trust, or a new local authority is created because of local government reorganisation.
